25th February 2015 Wednesday walk up Pico del Vilo

We did an old favourite this week. Starting from the village of Alfarnate we walked up good tracks and through a forest for about 2 hours to the top of Pico del Vilo.

It was sunny on top but a very cold wind we had some marvellous views of La Maroma, the 3 Tajos, Chamizo and could just see the mountains in Morocco. Because it was so cold we only had time for a cake and then made our way back down which only took about an hour. It was a nice walk and the ascent was well worth the effort to get the views.

16th February 2015 Little easy walk along the coast

We did  a supposedly easy walk along the coast today. According to the book we were following it was supposed to easy and last between one hour and one hour 15 minutes. It all started off fine on a beautiful sunny day at Maro near Nerja from where we followed the route perfectly along the cliff tops heading in an Easterly direction.
All was still going well and we arrived at the half way point where we descended down to the beach which were where all we had to do was to follow the beach back to the car. The first beach was very nice at the end of which we clambered over a few rocks to the next beach, the second beach was also nice but this time we had to do some scrambling which would not normally be described as easy but we managed it ok. Then came the third beach with the remains on an old tower half way along which was also very nice. At the end of this beach we hit our first problem we were supposed to clamber over some rocks to the last beach where we would ascend a ridge back to the car but the sea was too rough and would not be able to get over the rocks.
So the alternatives were go back along the beach to the half way point and then retrace out steps  back up to the top of the cliff's and follow the route that we had come on or attempt to clamber up the cliff on the beach that we were now stuck on to rejoin the original route back to the car. Guess which one we chose, yes your right clambering up the cliff's above the beach we were on. Well all I can say is that is was the shortest way back to the car but not the easiest. The cliffs were mainly scree and rubble with grassy bits. We tried to stick to the grassy bits where possible as most of the scree/rubble bits were a bit too steep and if we had lost our footing would probably have made it back down onto the beach below. We continued to make our way steadily up clinging onto clumps of grass a times. Eventually making it safely back to the car in two hours, another easy walk ticked off not.

Sunday 8th February 2015 Sierra De Loja

Went for a walk in the Sierra De Loja mountains which had snow on the tops. We drove up a rough track from Loja up to around 1400 meters where we parked up and walked on tracks past Charco Del Nergo (black pond which was covered with thick ice) and along the track to the very beautiful Cueva Hora before going up onto the top of the ridge to join the monster wind turbines. We were surprised at the number of people up there including lots of families who had taken their children up there to play in the snow. Scoobie disappeared while we were walking even though we did not see any animals for her to chase, there must have been lots of scents for her to follow. After the walk we drove round on the tracks where we had been but there was no sign of her.  We drove to the village of Riofrio for coffee and tostada at our favorite bread/cake shop before driving back to where we had the car parked and there was Scoobie walking back along the track.

Getting away from it all in the Sierra Almijara mountains

On Sunday 1st February we drove up the track next to the Nerja Caves to start our walk near the Pinarillo picnic area. We walked up onto Cerro Molinero in the Sierra Almijara range. It started on a good forest track towards the Fuente del Esparto. Just before the fuente we headed up a dry river bed where the track swung left then we followed this which zigzagged uphill for about an hour with some amazing views of the surrounding hills.

When we reached the top of the ridge the going got a lot easier and we eventually made our way down to join another forest track which we followed all the way back to the  car. The walk took 3 hours with a bit of effort required walking up to the top of the ridge but the spectacular scenery made it worthwhile.

On Monday 2nd February we did another walk in the Sierra Almijara mountains this time going from Fuente del Esparto up to Collado de la Terriza and back. We drove to the Fuente and immediately started uphill on another steep zigzagging track taking in more stunning views.

When we arrived at the coll after a walking uphill for about 2 hours we had a bite to eat and then retraced out steps back down to car. The total time of the walk was 3 hours 30 minutes.
